The Canberra branch’s first president and one of its most loved members, Peter Newark, passed away at home on the morning of Friday 4th May following complications from his lung cancer. He was 73.
Peter was a veteran Air Force photographer and was known for his dry sense of humour, his reservoir of stories, his cheeky smile, his pipe and, above all, his mascot T Bear who almost never left his side. He was our inaugural president in 1986, an office he also held through 1987 and 1988. Always an active member, he was the branch historian for several years in the 1990s. Until recently he was a regular rider with not only the Ulysses Club but also the Usual Suspects and the Vintage Veteran and Classic Motor Cycle Club. He was an avid collector and restorer of old bikes, though in recent years he was most often seen on his Honda VT750 Shadow.
Peter’s beloved wife and life-long companion Mary made sure he got to many functions including the last branch Christmas party and, only a few weeks ago, the April meeting and branch AGM.
We have lost not only a good friend but part of our shared history. Peter will definitely be missed!
Peter’s funeral was held at Norwood Park, Mitchell on Wednesday 9th May at 12:00 noon
